ChipShop has been on my list of neighborhood places to visit for quite some time. So when the infamous Myer Lemon graced me with an after-work drink offer, I took her there eager to impress.
The size of the crowds lurking by the ChipShop at night made me convinced that the place was entirely a drinking establishment with an occasional takeout. Apparently not – the ChipShop, long and narrow, is a pub-restaurant, adorned with an old wooden bar, cool Brit posters, and two TV sets.
It took Lemon and I several indecisive moments to settle on beers and fried haddock and chips. We were too distracted by the menu’s entertaining glossary – praising the amazing chips and revealing the horror of defrosted and thus utterly disgusting French fries. The glossary also presented a recipe for Scotch or Scottish eggs – hard boiled eggs wrapped in bacon. And if that wasn’t enough to cause cardiac arrest, the glossary explained that a “fried Atkins” was a fried Atkins bar. The place apparently specializes in frying candy bars and other desserts.
The haddock and chips were to die for. We omitted submerging the chips in vinegar but applied ketchup and delicious, mayonnaise-based sauce freely. Lemon, in thieving mode, was keen on snatching the tomato-shaped ketchup containers from our table; she also spent about 20 minutes in the bathroom reading the newspaper-clad walls.
Don reports that the ChipShop also serves a great lunch salad: Stilton, Granny Smith apples, and walnuts making it an ultimate winner. But still, next time Lemon and are at this Brit stop, we are getting “Bangers and Mash” with smashed peas and sharing an order of the “Spotted Dick” for dessert. I hope those are vegaquarian.
