D and I headed to this St Marks Place on-the-go food Mecca with one thought on our mind – chickplant! Certain to cause craving attacks and a definite sandwich hall-of-famer – chickplant is a pita stuffed with hummus, roasted (well, lets be honest here - it’s deep fried) eggplant, mashed boiled egg, mixed finely cut greens, and pickles.
The last item on the list requires an appeal to the Chickpea staffer; they will also throw onions into the mix upon request. It’s best to get the sandwich “to stay” so that it can be properly drowned in white tahini sauce from the bottles located throughout Chickpea’s tiny dining area. Though the rest of Chickpea’s kosher Middle-Eastern fare is tasty, everything pales in comparison to the chickplant – a possible culinary godsend from the land of the holy to the earthly East Village.
