Sometimes, hanging around Broadway and Houston, I get a feeling that no reason has ever existed for replacing an old taxicab wash-stop with an Adidas store. For drowning sorrows of New York’s fledging landmarks, there is and attraction, of sorts, just east of Lafayette on Houston. At first it’s hard to find. Big metal gates and occasional convergence of punks on bikes could be an orienteer. Botanica, as well-hidden by hectic Houston and Lafayette crossing as it could be, is dark and spacious and has the greatest writing on its bathroom walls. Bonus – great happy hour with girly, manly and other drinks all for $3 flat till 8pm. The drinks are not that expensive after the end of hours, all happy and unhappy, and you can always go to Crate and Barrel afterwards and break a few porcelain bowls. On a weekend, the place hops with usual lower east side/east village crowds and has a pleasantly low NYU contingency. In liquor selection nothing unusual has been spotted, so bring anything special in a flask and mix with solid cheap beers.
