D’s sister Lisa, one of my favorite Saint Louisians and definitely my most favorite mom, took us to this place in St Loui’s newly restored Lafayette Square. The city’s oldest historic district, with some houses and mansions dating back to the Civil War, Lafayette Square is a tour guide’s delight by day, and by night a hang out spot for herds of enlightened city dwellers.
The popularity of the bar showed its face at the front door. We were not the only ones wishing to get our hands on some Baileys-dipped chocolate and the wait for the tables was about 40 minutes. This didn’t stop us from sitting at the bar and ordering White Chocolate Raspberry and Dark Chocolate martinis. Adorned with chocolate stirrers, the drinks were delicious but of a sweet, slow sipping variety. While sipping, we did some people watching and Lisa and I made some mean-girls style fun of a lady with a giant Louis Vuitton purse that she prominently positioned on the bar for everyone to see. Fake or not, the purse was soon moved to the floor, and Lisa and I retreated back to our glasses to celebrate mean-girl victory. Sweet, like our drinks, the bartender eagerly replaced Lisa’s martini with a fresh one when a fly decided to die in the luxurious vodka, chocolate, raspberry mix. I can only hope to end my days by similarly drowning in something so scrumptious.
After enough damage was done at the bar, we were moved to the dining room, where D and I split a very tasty cheese plate and Lisa had dessert. I also ordered beer to wash down the sweet martini – the selection was pretty stellar and included the Belgian Le Chouffe which I previously had in Amsterdam. Overall it was great to go out in a different city and find out that there is much fun to be had in places outside of New York. Chocolate cheers!
